Today, February 21, International Mother Language Day is observed worldwide to promote awareness of linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism.
This is being celebrated every year since February 2000. It was first proclaimed by UNESCO on 17 November 1999. By the same resolution, the General Assembly proclaimed 2008 as the International Year of Languages.
