Michael Christian Martinez is the lone Filipino Winter Olympian who competes in the men's short program figure skating competition at the Iceberg Skating Palace during the in Sochi, Russia. At 17, he is the youngest skater in the program. Being a part of the Olympics is already an achievement and make him a pride of the Philippines.
In a place where there is no winter or even just a little snow, producing a figure skater is rare and Michael Christian Martinez is the first Pinoy to make it possible to join Olympics under figure skating. He was reportedly practiced at malls' indoor ice rinks since he was 8-years old. It is too unbelievable that he had an asthma, too. I admire him for the determination and hard work to make his dreams come true.
Martinez got a score of 6.21 for his skating skills, 6.04 for transition, 6.46 for execution, 6.36 for choreography, and 6.43 for interpretation timing, giving him a program components score of 31.50 and he also got a score of 33.31 for the technical elements of his performance, with his triple axel getting a 9.07 score from the panel of judges making him one of the top 24 skaters who make it to the free skate. Martinez will compete Friday in the free program together with other qualifiers who is led by Yuzuru Hanyu of Japan with a 101.45 score, a new world record.
